Portland In 1873 Louis Wagner rowed 10 miles over open water to a little island on the Maine Border called Smuttynose. He intended to rob a friend, but ended up killing 2 of the 3 women left alone that cold March night. When he was caught in Boston, he was brought back to Portsmouth, then sent to Portland by train.
Wagner was then brought to Alfred, the county seat for York and tried and convicted of the horrible crimes. When awaiting his trip to Thomaston, he escaped jail and made his way back to New Hampshire, where he was later recaptured and brought to Thomaston.
These facts of the true account can be found in the new book just published on Maine's biggest Murder Trial, Conviction, Jailbreak, Double Execution. The book is entitled "Return to Smuttynose Island" by Emeric Spooner.
The author actually tracked down the grave of Wagner, Maine's most notorious historical psychopath.
The book is 260 pages, 6x9, single spaced and professionally proofread. It is available on Amazon.com or the Maine Supernatural website, easily googled.
