Portland — Do you remember George McGovern? Yes, the liberal democrat senator from South Dakota who was soundly defeated by Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election. He carried only one state; Massachusetts. Who would have thought that today, the left has become the establishment and guys like McGovern, once a left icon, would once again be a voice of dissension towards the government? Obama and his followers, pretenders as the new generation of standard bearers for the sixties radicals, are now the very big government, propaganda machines the progressives one time railed against.

McGovern was making a point about Unions and the legislation put forth by the democrats to eliminate secret ballots for union votes. He is a strong supporter of Unions but will not put aside his principles in order to back them. He believes in the sanctity of the private vote even if it means weakening Unions. He has chosen freedom over strong arm union thugs imposing their will to strengthen themselves. He is a principled man who places doing right over winning. He understands that his side might be wrong sometimes.

The new generation of liberals is unable to see anything wrong with the politicians they support or the legislation and laws they pass. They have become the green shirts for liberalism, mind numbed from left winged education systems and the constant bombardment of propaganda from a liberal supporting media. The agents of government produce global warming movies that appeal to emotion but not the intellect and that emotion is used to pass laws and new taxes to merely redistribute wealth. The radicals of the sixties whose mantra was to question authority now merely follow their leaders and take everything they say as gospel.

How else can it be explained the willingness to do away with freedom of speech by proposing a fairness doctrine that would eliminate the voice of those they disagree with? In the sixties, underground papers and pamphlets could be found coast to coast. Small radio stations sprang up spewing the left winged ideology and public demonstrations were everywhere. Today, the left wants to pass laws by using the very government they feared and abhorred in the sixties to stop dissenting voices. Where the sixties left would fight in the streets for freedom from big government, the liberals of today are big government.

Perhaps the children of today will rebel against their parents much like the hippies and peaceniks did in the sixties. In the sixties, though, the media was complicit with the left against big government; today they lead it by the nose for big government, dangerously allied to put forth the liberal agenda.

The left is lead by emotion and very little reasoning. Dissenting voices are shouted down with insults. For example, when the left doesn’t have an argument to counter the rational thinking of the right, they revert back to demeaning language and attacking the messenger. Here are some typical responses to not just opposing opinions but news stories those on the left don’t agree with;

lunatic fringe foaming at the mouth

sophomoric

rather pathetic

wishy-washy

the kool-aid is rotting your brain.

right-wing nuts

low intellectual

seriously deluded

lacking in any kind of substantive thought

the drool from Pavlov's dogs

a member of a cult.

a piss-poor loser. Reminds me of Belicheat.

Cheneyesque

Pathetic

racist

sexist

right-wing loonies

It is my wish that more of those on the left will stop trying to win for the sake of winning and try to just do the right thing. McGovern should be your example and principles should be your guide.

Problem with this article is that it has more holes in it then a Cheney hunting buddy. Exactly were was the logical, radical thinking on the 'right' as deficits were incurred; wars started; rights violated; and secret meetings to increase oil prices set up at the White House. Is it rational to get the most ignorant highly self centered individuals to lead the right's political party. Fiscal conservative ideas aren't bad, but the republican party has never run anything right or conservative. Please, if you have a Republican Gov. who can balance a budget, without the Federal tax payer bailing his butt out; tell everyone who that imaginary person might be. I can't wait for this answer, WINDBAG! Good name for a sandwich, isn't it?
