CLOSING GITMO MAKES NO SENSE Symbolism From A Symbolic President

Portland — Here we go again. It seems President elect Obama, (PEBO) is going to issue an executive order to close GITMO;

“WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama is preparing to issue an executive order his first week in office -- and perhaps his first day -- to close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, according to two presidential transition team advisers.

It's unlikely the detention facility at the Navy base in Cuba will be closed anytime soon. In an interview last weekend, Obama said it would be "a challenge" to close it even within the first 100 days of his administration.”- http://www.appealdemocrat.com/articles/workers_72140___article.html/congress_auto.html

It appears that PEBO is going to be another “symbolism over substance” president, much in the vein of former president Clinton. And why would we think it to be any different? His administration is made up almost entirely of Clinton cabinet retreads who will give the same type of advice to Obama as they did to Bill.

There does appear to be one small problem, PEBO has no idea what to do with the detainees;

“What remains the thorniest issue for Obama, the advisers said, is what to do with the rest of the prisoners -- including at least 15 so-called "high value detainees" considered among the most dangerous there.”- http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-obama-gitmo13-2009jan13,0,200194.story

Why not put them up at the White House? There is a lot of security there and plenty of extra room. Apparently they aren’t dangerous enough to keep at GITMO.

And how does this make you lefties feel? PEBO’s symbolism over substance political campaign is beginning to come home to roost;

“Obama promised during the presidential campaign to shut Guantanamo, endearing him to constitutional law experts, civil libertarians and other critics who called the Bush administration detentions a violation of international law.

But he acknowledged in an interview Sunday that the process of closing the prison would be harder and longer than initially thought.”- http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-obama-gitmo13-2009jan13,0,200194.story

I guess it is easy to make promises to a gullible constituency when “hope and change” are promised; both rather vague concepts and perfect for the fantasy world of the left.

It is still funny to hear conservatives talk of "substance"; I wish to ask them exactly what they may be referring to when speaking of substance. While the republicans have referred to themselves as conservative many times over, I still can't find the substantive proof that this is true. The right wingers have been waving the flag for years while telling everyone that to know what is really fact one must listen to such men as Pat Robertson, Newt Geingrich, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld in order to know anything with substance of fact. Guess what; wrong answer, you failed again.
